Fellowship: Journalism in the Era of Disinformation

Cultural Vistas, a non-profit organization that provides international exchange opportunities to students and young professionals, invites you to apply to the Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship (JED), a funded fellowship program that gives student journalists from the United States and Germany the opportunity to meet their peers and learn about the role that disinformation plays in political coverage in both countries. Each year, up to 8 German and 8 American journalism students will be selected to participate in this week-long program in Washington, D.C. and New York, which will focus on political coverage in the U.S. and Germany and analyze the trend of “fake news”. By exchanging ideas with each other and with experts in the field, participants will analyze the development of disinformation in various media in both countries, while developing solutions to counteract these trends in journalism.

The program is funded by the Transatlantic Program of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany through funds of the European Recovery Program of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, and covers various program expenses for participants, including flight costs to/from Washington, D.C. and New York, program-related travel and accommodations, workshops and discussions with high-level contacts at various media, think tanks, and political institutions, and daily stipends during the program.

Eligible candidates for the JED Fellowship:

–      Are currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program of study in journalism, political communication, or related fields (in either the U.S. or Germany)

–      demonstrate a strong interest in a career in journalism focusing on political coverage (local, state, or federal)

–       have previous experience as an intern or employee in a media setting

–       are citizens or permanent residents in the country in which they are studying (the U.S. or Germany)

Candidates studying outside of larger media hubs and those with limited or no previous international experience are especially encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is January 14, 2019. The program will take place in Washington, D.C. and New York from May 18 to May 24, 2019. Participants from both the U.S. and Germany will travel together in these cities during the program week.

You can find more information at www.culturalvistas.org/jed, including the online application form. We encourage you to share this information and the JED fellowship info flier or this facebook post with eligible candidates. Please direct any questions about the program to info@culturalvistas.eu.

It’s in our name: the Washington Media Institute is an immersive, media-focused internship program unlike anything you’ve experienced. WMI offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with leading media professionals and get real world experience that other internship programs don’t offer.
Don’t believe us? Here’s what WMI alumni had to say..
WMI took everything I had learned so far in college about the media landscape and set it on fire – in the best way possible. WMI prepared me to keep moving forward in my educational and professional career. I left WMI knowing that I am capable of far more than I could have ever imagined. I know that I have the skills and the connections to help me land the job I want because of WMI.
KATEY HASS – UNIVERISTY OF COLORADO

I wish everyone would get the chance to do a program like WMI. The skills you learn, and the real-world experience you gain – it’s like nothing else out there.
JOE BARTEL – RECENT GRADUATE, SAINT NORBERT COLLEGE

There’s no way to adequately express in words the monumental role this program played in my life – especially when it comes to introducing me to the professional world of journalism. But the simplest way I can put it would be this: without participating in such an amazing program that offered me so many opportunities and opened countless doors for me early on in my career, there is no question that I would not be where I am now.
