Mass Comm scholarship applications open, due Jan. 31

The 2018-2019 The Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications application process is underway! The Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications awards numerous scholarships annually. Most of these scholarships have been supplied by non-university organizations and individuals. Applications for these scholarships are available below.

The application deadline for scholarships is Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, at 5 p.m. Recipients will be notified by Friday, February 16, 2018, and the specific scholarships awarded are announced at our annual banquet on Thursday, April 19, 2018.

Please take a minute to review the flyer, confirm eligibility and create your personal statement. After you have completed these steps, you may submit the application by clicking here. TBABJ accepting entries for Griot Drum Awards

The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ) is now accepting entries for its 2015 Griot Drum Awards program, which honors the best media coverage of people of color.

The contest is open to print, broadcast and online media professionals of all ethnicities. Journalists submitting entries do not have to be a member of TBABJ, a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

Any individual or news organization in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties can enter materials published, broadcast or presented online between Jan. 1, 2014 and Dec. 31, 2014. The deadline to submit entries is midnight Friday, Aug. 28, 2015. All entries must be submitted online.

Award winners will be presented during TBABJ’s 2015 Griot Drum Awards & Scholarship Banquet to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Tampa Marriott Westshore, 1001 N Westshore Blvd, Tampa.

Florida Outdoor Writers awards one to two scholarships of $1000 to college students

Each year, the Florida Outdoor Writers awards one to two scholarships of $1000 to college students as a way to encourage them to consider careers in writing, photography or video media related to the outdoors.

Florida Sea Grant is a corporate member of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association, and I serve as the chair of the organization’s scholarship committee.

Preference is given to journalism and communications majors, but in recent years, a number of winners have come from science majors as well. You can read about them at http://flseagrant.org/students/current-fellows.

Note the deadline for this year’s competition is May 16, 2015. Applicants need to submit:

  • the completed cover sheet;
  • an essay of between 500-1000 words;
  • a resume; and
  • a letter of endorsement from a faculty adviser.

 

 

Florida Associated Press College Contest, Scholarship deadline extended to March 13

The deadline to enter the Florida AP College Contest has been extended to March 13th Please encourage students to enter. Anyone who participates is automatically invited to attend the AP breakfast and College Workshop at the Wyndham Resort on International Drive in Orlando on April 11th. During this workshop, students will learn about networking, writing and how to land their first job.

This year we are offering two $1,000 scholarships to a junior who is majoring in broadcast journalism. You must write a 500 word essay. Deadline to qualify for scholarship is March 13, 2015. Contestants must attend the AP College Workshop in Orlando on April 11th from 9-Noon. The winners of the scholarship will be announced at that workshop. They will also be recognized at the AP gala that evening. There is no charge to attend the workshop. But you must register ahead of time.
