USF Athletics seeks communication intern

Athletic Communications Intern, University of South Florida

The University of South Florida Department of Athletics Communications is hiring undergraduate students for internships for class credit and work study positions. Athletic communications is an exciting industry where students will have the opportunity to learn public relations and media relations skills in the sporting industry from industry professionals.

Job Duties

At sporting events:

  • Attend sporting events such as football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball games and tennis matches and perform communications duties in the working press box or press area.
  • Media relations at sporting events including but not limited to running stats at sporting events, setting up press box, distributing statistical information and game notes, assisting media with minor requests
  • Statistical help including but not limited to spotting and inputting game plays and details
  • Content creation for social media including but not limited to taking photos and posting to USF Athletics social media accounts. This usually is an activity students enjoy and consider a privilege.

In the office:

  • Write press releases or assist with press releases about sporting events, news related to sporting teams, events, ticket sales, or other information regarding the athletic department.
  • Assist with media guides, this includes placing photos, writing copy, laying out text and photos for publication.
  • Graphic design work including creating game day programs, social media graphics, social media design and ideas, etc.
  • Create basic documents such as rosters, schedules, student athlete bios, game programs, etc.

Additional:

Communications is a broad field, and depending on the student’s interests and talents, additional duties may be decided on between the student and the supervisor. For example, if a student had a special interest in photography, videography, graphic design, social media strategy or traditional public relations, the student may be presented opportunities to work in these capacities. Other duties as assigned.

Students may also enjoy meals at sporting events where a meal is provided, and necessary USF apparel congruent with working events.

VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP POSITION DESCRIPTION

 Volunteer Position: Healthy Community Internship – Marketing and Social Media

 Work Location: Special Olympics Florida, Healthy Community Tampa Bay

 Commitment: Minimum of 10 hours per week for a full semester. Specific schedule to be agreed upon by Intern and Senior Outreach Manager.  Internship will take place out of Healthy Community Tampa Bay site at 5420 W. Cypress St. in Tampa.

 Job Summary: Learn about the planning and implementation of Special Olympics Florida Healthy Community Tampa Bay programs including awareness, education, structure and implementation of its initiatives for Special Olympics Florida athletes. Assist in the management of social media accounts and development of promotional materials to recruit clients and medical providers to assist with health screenings for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD).

 Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a thorough understanding of Special Olympics Florida and its programs.

 

  1. Meet weekly with an assigned mentor to develop an understanding of program management and health initiatives for Special Olympics Florida athletes.

 

  1. Learn about Healthy Community Programs.
    • Create outreach/recruitment flyers, web content, success stories, postcards & other outreach materials as required
    • Produce lively Social Media content for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
    • Assist with recruitment and outreach material for writing blogs, newsletters and publications

 

  1. Learn about the success of planning and implementing healthy community programs.
  • Develop an understanding of issues of health and wellness for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Work with Special Olympics Florida staff to evaluate the success of the health and wellness programs.
  • Help with marketing Healthy Community programs to athletes and county programs.
  • Represent Healthy Community programs at outreach events such as health fairs.
