Public Relations Internship – Spring 2017

Intern will assist with media relations, publicity, promotions, photography, social media, events and group sales in our fast paced environment.
Other functions include:
•Research, draft and proofread various marketing and publicity materials including: articles for Zoo publications, fact sheets, web site content, and promotional copy for special events, etc.
•Assist with escorting media and film crews on premises.
•Photograph events and animals at the Zoo to update photo library and organize existing archives.
•Attend and actively participate in Zoo special events and other PR functions as assigned (set-up and staging, check-in tables, manage RSVPs, etc.)
•Create Mail Dog e-newsletters for promotion of upcoming events, new exhibits, etc.
•Update media lists for VIP/media previews for major annual events.
•Occasional transportation of materials to/from PR department vendors.
•Assist with creating content and updating social media vehicles.
•Assist with the marketing efforts for the “Adopt an Animal” program.
•Assist with the collection and organization of marketing research.
•Junior or senior status or recent graduate with major coursework toward a degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Advertising.
•Excellent communications skills.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
•Familiar with social media vehicles such as Facebook and YouTube.
•Must be at least 18 years of age.
•Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
•Must be able to commit to a 14 week internship.
•Must be able to commit to a schedule of a minimum of 10 hours per week, preferably 15-20. Work days are primarily Monday through Friday within Zoo operating hours (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Days and hours are flexible.
•Some weekend and extended hours may be required during special events.
•If total semester internship hours must equal more than 15-20 hours per week, additional hours may be arranged.
If an internship offer is made, it is contingent on:
•Candidate will be responsible for a non-refundable $25 Application Fee.
•Candidates seeking academic credit must have arrangements agreed upon between the Zoo and their school before beginning the internship.
•All offers are contingent on the successful completion of a criminal background screening and execution of a required hold harmless/liability release agreement.
•Interns must have personal health insurance coverage for illness or injury (as volunteers and interns are not covered by the Zoo workers’ compensation program).
Internships are unpaid and are designed to meet academic requirements, as applicable, and provide valuable real-world experience for participants. Successful completion of an internship may also yield letters of recommendation, a portfolio of their work when applicable, and important networking contacts.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must be a Junior, Senior, or Master’s level students or recent graduates. Applicants must submit an Internship Application, cover letter, and resume in order to be considered for a position.
