Plant City Times & Observer seeks reporters

 Interns wanted for weekly paper

Put your backpack journalism talents to the test by completing an internship with the award-winning Tampa Bay Times partnership paper the Plant City Times & Observer.

We are looking for ambitious students, eager to push the limits of their reporting skills. We expect interns to write one to three articles per week for publication in both print and on PlantCityObserver.com. Interns will meet with a manager for evaluation of their stories after editing. Some photography work will be required, and we will teach additional skills. Video and podcast opportunities will be carved out for the right applicant. Some stories may be done remotely. If their class schedule allows, interns are welcome to copy edit during deadline day on Wednesdays.

Stories covered vary and beats are plentiful, as the Plant City Times & Observer‘s staff follows everything in the Plant City area, from interviewing country stars at the Florida Strawberry Festival to City Commission meetings on medical marijuana. Examples of stories include:

Local government

Long-form features

Cops Corner crime beat

Area schools

Sports

Entertainment

Photo pages of events

The Plant City Times & Observer is hyperlocal weekly community newspaper owned by the Tampa Bay Times and Sarasota-based Observer Media Group. It publishes on Fridays and distributes 15,000 papers to Plant City and Dover. The internship is unpaid.

Interested applicants can send a resume and cover letter to Managing Editor Amber Jurgensen. In your cover letter, include ideas of what you want to bring to the Plant City Times & Observer. For additional questions, text Amber at (850) 496-6268.
